Ye Shanghai goes to Venice!

Since we first presented Ye Shanghai in 2012 during SH Contemporary, the performance by artist and composer Roberto Paci Dalò has been traveling all over Europe. Now, we are very excited to present Ye Shanghai in Venice with an installation that will inaugurate on the 10th of November at Bevilacqua la Masa, and which will be on display until the 17th of November.

Join us on the 10th November at 6:00 pm, at Palazzetto Tito for the opening of the installation and the launch of the brand new Ye Shanghai record, presented with a conversation between Roberto Paci Dalò, Francesca Girelli (Arthub) and Mirko Rizzi (Marsèll).

Ye Shanghai is an audio-video installation based on various aspects of life in Shanghai before 1949. At the center of this work is the story of the Shanghai Ghetto, an area occupied by the Japanese in the Hongkou district. This area housed approximately 23,000 Jewish refugees after they fled from German occupied Europe before and during World War II. The work is based on audio and film materials found between the years 1933 and 1949 and images found in the BFI Archives in London.

The presentation of Ye Shanghai in Venice has been possible thanks to Spazio Aereo Cultural Association in collaboration with Fondazione Bevilacqua La Masa, as part of the project formAzioni, a series of encounters, performance and concerts devoted to exploring sonic materials.

Under the umbrella of this exciting program, Roberto Paci Daló will also hold a workshop titled Sonic Tailors, which will take place on the 12th and 13th of November. During the workshop the artist will work with the participants to investigate the archives of the Venetian Institute for History of the Resistance and Contemporary Society (IVESER) and explore possibilities of transforming historical materials into contemporary creations.

The program of activities gravitating around Ye Shanghai, will culminate on the 14th of November with two unforgettable live performances to be held at Spazio Aereo at 9:30 pm. Ye Shanghai and the outcomes of the Sonic Tailors workshop will be presented, followed by a DJ set with Ghighi Di Paola and Pino Saulo (hosts of the program Battiti, on air every night on the RAI Italian National Radio).
