Unnamed, ritual spaces in Demanio Marittimo. Km-278
Demanio Marittimo. Km-278
Edition VIII / Coexistence
Time: 2018 July 20, 18:00-06:00
Venue: Public Beach, Marzocca di Senigallia, Italy
On July 20, 2018, the eighth edition of Demanio Marittimo. Km-278—the night dedicated to architecture, performance, arts and design—took place on Marzocca di Senigallia beach, from 6pm in the evening to 6am in the morning. During the event dedicated to Coexistence, international guests will be invited on stage along the sea shore to narrate our contemporary age until dawn, with talks, lectures, workshops and live productions.
The project is created by Cristiana Colli and Pippo Ciorra and promoted by the magazine MAPPE, directed by Cristiano Toraldo di Francia with the collaboration of MAXXI, Museum of Arts from the XXI century, the Municipality of Senigallia, the Marche Region, and sponsored by a network of companies, institutions and national and international cultural associations.
Every year, a large, mobile community gathers on this portion of the Adriatic shore, founded on the trust in projects applied to architecture, art, design, enterprise, territory: always with social innovation on mind. The community is formed of the many Italian and international voices that have given life to the event, to a network across the two sides of the Adriatic Sea, and to a global perspective. As a follow up of the 2017 edition, when community was the key word, this year the coexistence of ideas, stories, trajectories, and migrations takes on a special meaning.
Demanio Marittimo has invited prestigious guests, such as Giancarlo Mazzanti, Christopher Roth and Jan Boelen, along with young artists, performers and well-known designer like Liam Young, James Taylor Foster. Some of them will be on the beach to kick off an ambitious project of travelling, transdisciplinary research activity called “Housing the Human.” The project intends to contribute to coexistence between individuals and communities in contemporary space. Under the supervision of Freo Majer (Forecast, Berlin), Joséphine Michau (Copenhagen Architecture Festival), Jan Boelen (Istanbul Design Biennale) and Pippo Ciorra (MAXXI, Demanio Marittimo.Km-278), the research will produce five prototypes that will be presented in Copenhagen and Berlin in the course of 2019, and during the next edition.
The spotlight is still on the earthquake as a metamorphosis of the natural, cultural and urban landscape of Marche, and in particular on the photographs of Olivo Barbieri, Paola De Pietri and Petra Noordkamp for Terre in movimento. The project is promoted by the Superintendence of Marche for Cultural Heritage, Cultural Activities, and Tourism led by Carlo Birrozzi, together with MAXXI and the Dutch Embassy.
On a dedicated stage, Unnamed, Ritual Spaces will be interpreted by Andrea Anastasio (Sinopie), Roberto Paci Dalò (Niggunim | nobori), Alessandro Sciarroni (Don’t be afraid of turning the page) and curated by artistic director Davide Quadrio. This project is shaped around a conversation, an installation and two performances. From 6pm to 6am, the passing of every hour will be marked by a 12 key word: by the blog unaparolaalgiorno.it.

The meetings and actions of the eighth edition will take place in the spaces and on the stages designed by the students of the Royal College of Art of London: The winning project, Fili d’Unione (Matthew Darmour-Paul, Dika Terra Lim, Yujun Liu, and Chi-Jen Wang) meditates on the beach as limit of the contemporary urban landscape was selected by the jury chaired by Margherita Guccione, Director of MAXXI Architettura. The architecture created by young talents will also meet an icon: the legendary Sacco by Zanotta, which celebrates its 50 years in 2018, the “official chair” of Demanio Marittimo.Km-278.
