Ye Shanghai is an audio-video installation based on various aspects of life in Shanghai before 1949. At the core of this work is the incredible story of the Shanghai Ghetto, an area occupied by the Japanese in the Hongkou District that housed about 23,000 Jewish refugees, after they fled from German-occupied Europe before and during World War II. The project is based on audio and film materials of the years between 1933 and 1949. The filmic images have been sourced by the artist from the archives of the British Film Institute (BFI) in London.
The project was originally produced by Arthub and commissioned for SH Contemporary 2012. The installation in Turin marks its fifth iteration. The year following its inception, Ye Shanghai was presented as a special event at the 9th Shanghai Biennale and the 2013 DEMANIO MARITTIMO KM 278. In 2014, the performance traveled to Venice for a presentation at Palazzetto Tito; the inauguration was complimented by the launch of Roberto Paci Dalò’s Ye Shanghai record.
Ye Shanghai is a co-production with Arthub, SH Contemporary, Hanging Gardens, Notch Festival, Messagerie; in association with the British Film Institute; in collaboration with iTOPIA Management Consulting Co. Ltd., Fudan University in Shanghai, Home Movies – National Archive of the Family Film, and the Gorizia optical chamber.
Ye Shanghai – Performance and presentation
Time: 19:00, November 5, 2016
Following his performance, Roberto Paci Dalò will introduce his new book Filmnero (Marsèll, 2016). The artist will present his evolving multi-year project in conversation with Patrizia Asproni (President of Fondazione Torino Musei), Marco Biscione (Director of MAO), Davide Quadrio (Director of Arthub), and Mirko Rizzi (Artistic Director of Marsèll).
Filmnero is an embossed Moleskin artist notebook. The book – published by Marsèll, care of Mirko Rizzi – documents the production and filmic works, presented earlier this year on the occasion of the exhibition Filmnero, curated by Maria Savarese at the gallery All Blu di Prussia in Naples. During the presentation, Marsèll will also present the 2014 produced Ye Shanghai record.
Roberto Paci Dalò is a musician, film maker, theatre director, visual artist, author and activist – active for years on the international scene. He creates his works starting with sound and drawings, then expands to sculpture, installation, music, film, performance, and collaborative projects, between institutions, the independent scene, and pop culture.
In defining his own work Paci Dalò coined the definitions: media dramaturgy and theatre of listening. He frequently creates his works in various fields, further investigating different aspects of perception of the same material. Thus scene and music works often become radio pieces or interactive sound/video installations and online projects.
