SHANGHAI CONTEMPORARY ART ARCHIVE RESEARCH PROJECT AFTER 1998

Shanghai Contemporary Art Archive Research Project After 1998 now is being exhibited in Guggenheim Museum New York as the archive section in the exhibition Art and China after 1989: Theater of the World from October 6, 2017.

As a not-for-profit archive project, Shanghai Contemporary Art Archive Research Project After 1998 has gathered a generation of artists’ memory and history expectation. This project focuses on BizArt Center, artist curation practice and Art-Ba-Ba as the objects of research by interviewing testifiers and re-organizing the rich historical archive, in an attempt to restore the partial features of Shanghai contemporary art history, and eventually to illustrate the necessity of this history and the complicated influence on current art ecology.

The archive project initiated on September 2nd, 2016. After a year of research and study, the final presentation will be showcased in formats of publication and documentary.

About the Publication

The first English publication of this archive research project, Shanghai Contemporary Art Archival Project 1998-2010, was launched in the exhibition Shanghai Contemporary Art Archive Research Project After 1998, designed and published by Italian famous publisher MOUSSE.

As the first episode of the trilogy publications, this book will orchestrate a holistic historical archive with the upcoming two episodes.
This publication works as a catalogue which contains all the relevant art event, including event information, images and introduction, in order to provide an access to researchers and scholars. It has also sorted the pioneer practice in Shanghai contemporary art history.

About the Documentary

The documentary contains three chapters, which are BizArt Center, Artist Curation Practice, and Art-Ba-Ba. It showcases and explains the relevant topics about the exhibition Shanghai Contemporary Art Archive Research Project After 1998.

After a year of preparation and shooting, the documentary has finally been screened to the public in Guggenheim New York. A short version will be screened in China on all media platforms. We will also share this documentary with you on our website and WeChat.

Shanghai Contemporary Art Archive Research Project After 1998 aims to holistically sort this period of history, which is important but not always been mentioned. This will be a long term research. The research team will continuously complete the archive and re-explore the significance of these art practice. We hope that everyone in art realm support and follow this project. The archive research project will present to the public the most inspiring and significant cases, and make the past not only a history.
