The second edition of Independent Art Spaces Beijing will host art projects from across the city, whether you have a fixed location or are a collective occupying public spaces or private apartments or exist in the digital. Taking the question of independent art practice in China a step further, we want to explore different possibilities of space and their founding concepts. In a time, when space is no longer necessarily connected with a specific locality we want to highlight projects of art that happen outside of the institutional system. This edition we will showcase Beijing-based art spaces, but also projects especially created for this year’s program.
The topic of Independent Art Spaces Beijing 2016 addresses the topic: BE WATER. A proclamation for a practice that is neither fixed nor controlled, but rather fluid, flexible, essential and omnipresent, in both the small and large. Water incorporates everything, and everything can incorporate water. It is life-sustaining. Water has no shape; instead, it flows where it desires, and it alters its movement and speed as it wishes, or as the need requires. Bruce Lee’s mantra, “be water my friend” inspires us to become anything we want and to take any shape we like. Be Water investigates this ability and creates upon the same notion.
The program presents in various locations and will include exhibitions, performances, concerts, screenings and lectures. The variety of programs mirrors Beijing’s broad spectrum of international and independent art scene.
