Surasi Kusolwong: Commissioned Project in Thailand

Remains of the (past) Days, a Project for 2010’s (last) Day

Part of Davide Quadrio’s research, commissioned by the National Research Center of Thailand, will include the unnamed project of Surasi Kusolwong; the artist is proposing a personal journey into Bangkok’s recent history of the arts. The artist selected eighteen locations based on a mixture of personal references and the historical uniqueness of each place.

This project is rooted in the distinctive perspectives and relationships of an artist with his/her cultural environment. Though always based on true historical facts, the result is an individual and somewhat indulgent story telling that carves a personal journey into the development of the metropolis. Surasi is conducting us into a magical travel, through forgotten and distorted places full of archaeology of the contemporary: the artist affirms, standing in front of these places, the value of what remains of the days that passed.

Looking at the footage and at the pictures taken on the last day of 2010 (18 locations in a single day of shooting), the power of the evocative images soon made us realize that this story is actually universal. It is the story of the alternative, forgotten realities that only few dare to dig out of the dust.
