Just What Is It That Makes Shanghai So Different, So Appealing?

Time: 10 September from 7:00 to 9:00 pm

The Shanghai Zendai Museum of Modern Art and Yishu: Journal of Contemporary Art are hosting a panel discussion and book launch for their September 2008 issue that presents a focus on Shanghai. The panel discussion will bring together artists, curators, and writers who have a passion about the Shanghai art scene and who wish to encourage a dialogue about its current and its future state. Some of the panelists have contributed texts to the September issue of Yishu, and they will continue a discussion of topics that arose in their writing.

Topics to be discussed include:

What makes the Shanghai art scene distinct?
What forms of critical discourse take place in Shanghai?
Are issues of Chinese identity reflected in the art of Shanghai?
Does Shanghai need the rest of the world for its art system to evolve?
Where will the Shanghai art community be positioned in five years?

Members of the panel include: curator/writer Biljana Ciric, artist Ji Weiyu, artist Hu Jieming, Director of Arthub/BizArt Davide Quadrio, artist Song Tao, and writer/critic Zhao Chuan

Moderated by Keith Wallace, Editor of Yishu: Journal of Contemporary Chinese Art.
