Open Call: DEFAULT19 THE PROJECT

DEFAULT19 THE PROJECT

RAMDOM ASSOCIATION with Institutional support of Arthub Asia is calling for research-based artists to take part in a 6-day group investigation aimed at ideas related to extreme lands and remote areas. Situated at the southern tip of east Italy on the Mediterranean, Gagliano del Capo poses as an ideal location for participants of the DEFAULT 19 Residency to contribute to an investigation of the extreme land.

Arthub will select 1 or 2 artists from the candidates to support the flight to this 6-day session in Italy, with an afterward collaboration on Arthub’s Exhibition on the Table project and online screening.

The residency program asks what we can learn about being situated in a remote location like Gagliano del Capo. What can it teach us about the contemporary global condition, including sociological, anthropological, political or scientific positions? Can we assign a psychological profile to someone who seeks the end or the extreme? Artistic research and resulting works can bring forward proposed impossibilities and new imaginaries shaped by the characteristics of the extreme land. Approaching “extremity” as a state of mind allows for a confrontation with a contemporary world where national identities are fluid and boundaries are no longer static. The finis terrae may have captured the imagination of dreamers and adventurers, but in what ways can it also serve as a call to action for urgent realities and a methodology to be implemented elsewhere?

During working days participants will individually and collectively develop their research approach in workshops and seminar sessions. They will expand their network and exchange ideas with the support of the programme curators, external guests and lecturers.

Conceived to encourage the research as a separate moment from the production, DEFAULT 19, will function as a platform that aims at re-negotiate the notion of time by nurturing a radically non-productive oriented format. During the six-days of residency, participants are called to be individually and collectively engaged with the landscape in its broader geographical and anthropological extent. The residency will serve as a laboratory and as an experience to nurture new forms of thoughts and approaches to the topic of the extreme lands.

The residency will be finalized afterword by producing a publication edited by Ramdom and release by the end of the year. All participants will contribute to the publication with a text.

The call is open to all disciplines: artists, curators, and researchers; or coming from other disciplines: writers, anthropologists, linguists, architects, urbanists, geographers and, professionals from scientific disciplines.

Works will be in English.
This is an international call open to any artist of any nationality and at least 21 years of age. Application of mid-career artists is encouraged.

Accommodation will be provided by Ramdom
Participants’ travel expenses will be cover by the Institutional Partners.
