About Zuhe Niao (Niao Collective)
Zuhe Niao(Niao Collective)was founded in Shanghai, China, in 2005. She is committed to making contemporary Chinese theatre international and experimental. The group consists of “New Dance” actors, visual and musical artists, New Media artists, Life Art and other experimental performers, who have had a pioneering role in creating “Liminal Theatre.” Niao does not want to limit itself to a certain style but creates pieces without set boundaries, so the result will be different and new each time. In order to realize this, Niao was established as an open collective: the basic line-up is a group of professional and amateur artists from various disciplines, but members are not fixed and different people participate in productions each time. Since establishing itself in Shanghai’s and Beijing’s underground theatres, the group has enjoyed a strong following among young people.
Its representative works include Tongue’s Memory of Home (2005), Sickroom No. 14 (2006), Left Cheek (2007), Sickroom No. JI (2008), Stay with Me Overnight (2009), The Red Chamber (2010), Sickroom QING MING (2011), Dance, Stupid! (2011), and Silent Acapella (2011). At the invitation by several theatres, Zuhe Niao has toured major European and Asian cities such as Berlin, Rome, Paris, Amsterdam, Oslo, Salzburg, Düsseldorf, Zurich, Dublin, Edinburgh, Singapore, Hong Kong and Beijing.
